Guidelines for Writing Assignment (Steps/Stages):
- Go through all the lessons of Unit 1 and complete the activities.
- Identify the important dates and events and organize them sequentially in a timeline**.
- Describe the events briefly.
- Add pictures related to the events.
**Timeline: A timeline is a display of a list of events in achronological order. Here is an example for you. May, 1971 [Use your picture] What had happened:
• Pakistan Army set fire to Bangabandhu’s Tungipara home
• A young man was shot for protesting the fire to Bangabandhu’s home
25 March 1971 - Genocide Day
On the night of 25 March, the Pakistani military began a violent crackdown to suppress the Bengali opposition. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was arrested and taken to West Pakistan. British journalist Simon Dring, in hiding, reported a massacre unfolding.
26 March 1971 - Declaration of independence
Before his arrest, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman called upon his people to resist Pakistani forces of occupation in a declaration that read,
“This may be my last message, from today Bangladesh is independent. I call upon the people of Bangladesh wherever you might be and with whatever you have, to resist the army of occupation to the last. Your fight must go on until the last soldier of the Pakistan occupation army is expelled from the soil of Bangladesh and final victory is achieved.”
This declaration of independence marks the beginning of the Bangladesh Liberation War and is observed as Bangladesh Independence Day.

1971 - Awami League proclaims independence of the province as Bangladesh. Pakistan is defeated in brief war, with Indian assistance.
1972 - League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman becomes prime minister and begins a programme of nationalising key industries.
1974 - Severe floods devastate much of the grain crop, leading to an estimated 28,000 deaths.
1975 - Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is assassinated in a military coup in August. Martial law is imposed.
1977 - General Ziaur Rahman becomes president.
1981 - President Ziaur Rahman is assassinated in abortive coup.

2017 October - The number of Rohingya Muslims who fled military action in Myanmar's Rakhine state and sought refuge in Bangladesh is estimated at one million.
2018 February - Opposition leader Khaleda Zia is sentenced to five years in prison for corruption, disqualifying her from contesting the elections later in the year.
2018 December - Governing Awami League wins landslide victory in parliamentary election, but the campaign was marred by reports of violence, intimidation, and vote-rigging. At least 17 people died in clashes between Awami League and opposition supporters.
